American Alps

In cenral Washington is a small dorf called Leavenworth. For those of you in California that name will conjure up images of federal prison. But, here in Washington, it is home to a quaint Bavarian village all dressed up with German language and architecture. We passed through the area on our way home from the reunion. We have been itching to visit ever since we were told of the place by friends. We had planned to spend a weekend there for our anniversary in May, but something intervened. The place is very pretty and has a nice feel to it. The main attraction is the shops. We spent several hours window shopping, then subjected ourselves to a German lunch. I say "subjected" because this turned out to be the second worst meal we have ever had. The worst was also in a German restaurant in Kellogg, Montana. So much for German food. Except for the culinary offerings, the place was a treat as you can see from the pictures. The whole town has adopted the Bavarian theme. All voluntary, including the businesses like McDonalds and the local bank. Flowers are everywhere and the buildings are painted with Swiss motifs. The hills behind the village give it all a very European air.
